Building Solutions for Ontario's Housing Crisis

Ontario’s housing industry is facing unprecedented challenges in a rapidly evolving market. High home prices driven by ever increasing fees and taxes, rising rental costs, and government policies at all levels that limit supply have created barriers for Ontarians from urban centres to rural and northern communities. For Ontarians trying to find homes for their families, the stakes have never been higher.

At OHBA, we believe the solution begins with bold, transformative action. Ontario’s population is projected to grow by over 2.6 million people in the next 10–12 years, requiring 1.5 million new homes to meet demand. Achieving this ambitious target demands a housing system that prioritizes affordability, stability, and choice, for renters and homeowners, at every stage of life.

Navigating the Policy Maze

The private sector builds 95% of Ontario’s new housing, yet government policies heavily influence where, what type, and when housing is built. Municipal approvals, provincial legislation, federal tax law, regulatory frameworks, and mortgage rules all play a critical role in shaping supply. In this complex environment, OHBA works tirelessly to advocate for policies that:

  • Increase Housing Supply - Simplifying approvals and removing red tape to bring homes to market faster.
  • Balance Housing Options - Supporting a mix of ownership and rental opportunities that meet diverse needs.
  • Support Affordability - Addressing labour, land use, ever increasing fees, taxes and fiscal policies that drive up costs often unnecessarily.

Through collaboration with policymakers and industry stakeholders, OHBA aims to create a healthier housing system for everyone.
