What’s Your Why? Keith Kristalovich Shares His Passion for the Building Industry

As part of the Ontario Home Builders’ Association (OHBA)’s Q2 campaign, we’re diving into the powerful question: “What’s your why?” Each member and partner involved with OHBA has a unique story, and we’re excited to showcase those motivations in our ongoing series.

This week, we enjoyed chatting with Keith Kristalovich, a key figure in the building industry and currently Vice President of Education and Training Partnerships at the Professional Home Builders Institute (PHBI). He shared his inspiring perspective on why he continues to be so deeply involved.

A Natural Fit: How Keith Got Involved

Keith’s journey began in 2019 when he approached OHBA, seeking to contribute to an industry he believes in. “I was drawn to OHBA because of the shared mission,” Keith explained. “The PHBI focuses on education, much like OHBA. Both organizations are deeply committed to supporting and improving the home building industry, from training to advocacy.”

This mutual dedication to improving the industry made the partnership a perfect fit for Keith and his team. OHBA’s mission of building a stronger, more sustainable industry resonated with his core values, making it an easy decision to get involved.

The Importance of Connection: Why Keith Stays

But what keeps Keith connected to OHBA and the building industry at large? For him, it’s all about the people. “The staff and leadership at OHBA have been incredibly committed, passionate, and dedicated to their work,” Keith shared. “That energy and enthusiasm are contagious, and it’s something that’s kept me coming back.”

Keith’s connection to the OHBA grew from the moment he met Joe Vaccaro, OHBA’s former CEO, who is now the CEO of ENERQUALITY. “The passion and energy Joe brought to the table were so inspiring. Every CEO and team member who followed has carried that same drive forward. It’s evident that everyone at OHBA is there for the right reasons, and that’s been a huge motivator for me.”

What’s Keith’s Why?

When asked about his personal and professional “why,” Keith’s response was clear: improvement and impact. “I believe in continuous improvement—not only for individuals but for industries as a whole. When people upgrade their skills and take ownership of their challenges, it elevates the industry. It creates a ripple effect that benefits everyone involved.”

Keith sees the value in the third-party validation that organizations like OHBA provide. “When people invest millions of dollars in building their dream homes, they need to trust that the professionals doing the work are skilled and capable. We’re here to ensure that the industry maintains those high standards and delivers quality.”

For Keith, the motivation to get better and to help others improve is a driving force. “When you’re learning, you’re growing. And when you’re growing, your team is growing. If your team is improving, then the entire industry benefits. That’s what drives me.”

The Power of Lifelong Learning

Keith’s personal “why” extends beyond just the professional realm. He’s a lifelong learner, always seeking new ways to improve. “Learning never stops,” he said. “Whether it’s a course, a webinar, or reading a book, there’s always something more to learn. That’s how I stay motivated and engaged in my career and personal life.”

Keith’s passion for education is something he shares with OHBA, as the organization provides countless opportunities for members to continue learning and growing. “It’s so powerful to be part of a community that values education as much as I do,” he said. “The more you learn, the better you become at what you do—and that’s invaluable.”

A Shared Commitment to Growth

As Alicia Phillips, OHBA’s Manager, Membership Liaison, noted during their conversation, learning is at the heart of both their professional lives. Alicia’s enthusiasm for gaining new knowledge mirrors Keith’s passion, highlighting the importance of continuous development in every field.

Keith agrees wholeheartedly: “Whether you’re a kid in school or an adult looking to strengthen your skills, there’s always more to learn. It’s a mindset that helps us all improve and grow.”

A Vision for the Future

Keith Kristalovich’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of passion, education, and continuous improvement in any industry. His commitment to the building industry and his drive to help others grow are the cornerstones of his involvement with OHBA, by sharing his “why,” Keith hopes to inspire others to think about their own reasons for engaging with and contributing to the world around them.

As the OHBA’s Q2 campaign continues, we encourage you to reflect on your own “why.” What motivates you to get involved? How can your unique story help inspire others to take action and make a difference? Share your why with us—we’d love to hear it!
