What’s Your Why? Kris Riley Talks Advocacy, Action, and Making a Difference
As part of the Ontario Home Builders’ Association (OHBA)’s Q2 campaign, we’re diving into the powerful question: “What’s your why?” Each member and partner involved with OHBA has a unique story, and we’re excited to showcase those motivations in our ongoing series.
This week, we had the opportunity to connect with Kris Riley, founder of Kreekside Construction Group and a passionate advocate in the residential construction industry, who shared why being part of OHBA continues to matter so much to him.
How Kris Got Involved: Finding a Voice in Advocacy
For Kris, his involvement with OHBA began as a response to a growing frustration — skyrocketing development fees, increasing red tape, and a system that seemed to make it harder and harder to build a home.
“It’s the support we get back on a legislative level from OHBA and CHBA,” Kris shared. “You’re advocating for change in how homes are built — and all the fees and red tape that make it tough for everyday clients.”
That advocacy piece struck a chord. Like many OHBA members, Kris realized that real change starts by having a seat at the table — and that OHBA provides the platform to make his voice count.
“Without a voice, nothing’s going to change. I really believe that the Home Builders’ Association is that voice. That’s why I support it, and that’s why I’ll continue to support it.”
The Power of Connection: Why Kris Stays
Beyond the policy work, Kris is just as passionate about the people.
“The side benefits are the networking, the conversations, the quality of people you’re surrounded by. When you surround yourself with successful people, you’re more likely to succeed.”
He also highlighted how OHBA’s community helps streamline his business — vendors actively seeking help, offering solutions, and building meaningful partnerships.
“It’s vendors coming to us saying, ‘Hey, you’ve got a problem — I’ve got a solution.’ That’s what keeps us going.”
For Kris, OHBA isn’t just an industry association — it’s a network of problem-solvers, collaborators, and changemakers.
What’s Kris’s Why?
When asked about his personal and professional “why,” Kris didn’t hesitate — his motivation is rooted in making a difference for both his clients and the industry at large.
“If you told me I could give five hours a week and that would lower development fees by 80%, I’d do it in a heartbeat — not for me, but for the people.”
Kris sees OHBA as the channel through which he can advocate, educate, and lead by example, especially for the everyday families who have no idea how much bureaucracy impacts affordability.
Building for the Next Generation
Kris’ passion for advocacy also comes from a personal place — his family. Like so many parents, he’s deeply concerned about the affordability crisis and the uncertain future facing young people.
“All of my kids can’t live in my house forever. But with where things are headed, they might not have a choice.”
It’s this blend of personal commitment and professional responsibility that fuels his drive to be part of the solution — not just for his own business, but for families across Ontario.
“If we don’t step up and speak out, nothing’s going to change. It’s past time. We need people in the driver’s seat making things happen.”
A Call to Action
Kris Riley’s story is a bold reminder of why involvement matters—not just for our own businesses but also for the future of housing in Ontario. His passion for advocacy and his deep care for people define his “why” and his continued commitment to OHBA.
